Since early 2022, we’ve been in discussion with a German School – Sankt Afra – regarding a collaboration between students and researchers. Sankt Afra specialises in educating youngsters who show a high level of academic and intellectual talent, and the teaching staff are keen to offer their students wide opportunities to develop their interests and skills.
In late 2022, Dr MacLeod visited the school and in a workshop with the students, it was decided that they would set up a subproject to explore the capabilities of school students for reliably finding and marking marine iguanas in drone images. Additionally, some students plan to help develop AI capacities for this same task.
In the coming months, Iguanas from Above and Sankt Afra will deepen this collaboration to bring cutting edge research into the classroom, and gain important input for our research aims along the way. Watch this space for further updates.
